I think of the Ultimate edition as a direct successor to XP Professional. As the name implies, Ultimate combines all the features found in the home Premium with those found in the Business enterprise.

See much more about the Vista Ultimate Edition. The Business Enterprise version also has Unix and multi language support. Regular business edition. Similar to the basic Vista version, but with the ability to join a domain.

This edition also has Remote Desktop. However, it lacks the Media Center. The key feature of the Premium edition is the Windows Media Center. You will also notice that the specification for this edition includes a mention of the Aero Graphics interface.

You will get a wonderful operating system, it just will not have the Windows Media Center and will not be able to join a domain. Beware, double check, whereas Microsoft explicitly mention Aero Graphics for the above four editions, they do not mention Aero in the Home Basic version.

Microsoft are describing Home Basic as the foundation for all the other Vista versions. Great price, easy email or fax eligibility determination, fast shipping to California.

Dec 9, 8, 3 A vote for Home Premium here. It has pretty much everything Ultimate has that the average enthusiast on these boards would need. You would have to have very specialized needs for it not to meet them. Home Premium is just fine for even the greatest of power users.

I do not know much about the whole student discount deal, but I can tell you about the upgrade. Simply, if you purchase an upgrade edition of Vista, it requires you to already have a Windows XP installation on your hard drive for you to be able to install Vista.

It will end up formatting your drive anyway, but it has that little requirement it has to check before hand. This is different from old upgrade versions of windows as they used to require you to have an install disc from a previous OS. With Vista, the old disc is not necessary, but you have to have XP installed and activated on your current machine.

Advanced networking features such as projectors, ad hoc support and simultaneous SMB connections are also available. This allows users to create a new meeting and even join existing ones. The touch features that it offers gives others serious competition. Being an old version, the bit system can support only up to 16 GB of RAM, which may be looked at as one limitation. Vista Ultimate and Home Premium are two popular versions of the Windows Vista operating system series.

A major difference between the two is that Vista Ultimate was launched much after the latter. This also means that it is a premium, upgraded version and provides numerous additional features that Home Premium does not have.

Furthermore, an installed version of Windows 7 can be booted and run from a VHD drive, even on non-virtual hardware, thereby providing a new way to multi boot Windows. The default disk partitioning structure in Windows 7 is to create two partitions: the first for booting, Bitlocker and running the Windows Recovery Environment and second to install the operating system.

Windows 7 has also seen improvements to the Safely Remove Hardware menu, including the ability to eject just one camera card at the same time from a single hub and retain the ports for future use without reboot; and removable media is now also listed under its label, rather than just its drive letter like it was in Windows Vista.

BitLocker brings encryption support to removable disks such as USB drives. Such devices can be protected by a passphrase, a recovery key, or be automatically unlocked on a computer.
